My father Richard "Dick" Burris was on the ship in the 60's. Reading the message board, his name was mentioned as an XO. I was young at the time but remember those long WestPac's! Also, Bill Springs and Capt. Smith were guests at our house often. My father passed away in 1995 but I have fond memories of his ship stories. He was a true Navy man!
I recognize some names from the roster. I am living in Marysville California I'm 53 now. I still am good friends with S.N. Scott Vance 1970. I'll send him this.It sure was alot of hard work but'I had some great times.
I am know 59 years of age and was reminising of my years served aboard the tiger when to my disappointment didn't see my name on the Tiger's roster from 1965-68 checking the roster I saw a lot of my ship-mates and not my name. I checked the web site from 1965-1968 and to my disappointment my name was not on the roster. Why????????? not. Please any of my shipmates that read this try and contact me.
I was the ship's COMO for the last Vietnam tour and stayed onboard until it was decommissioned. I served under Lt Cmdr. Woody. I can probably fill in a little history.
can you help me find a song I have to have for class on Tuesday called Submarinal song or something like that my First Sargent gave it to me to sing for a grade and so far I haven't found it any where Thank you
I am the Mom, of a Major in the United States Army. THANK YOU! to all of the men and women in uniform that so selflessly give of their time, life and effort to keeping our country free!!.

I server on board the Polk County, the Tioga county, and I was A plank owner on the San Bernadino. after my first enlistment I went to the East coast, made chief and retired.
My father, George P. Brown, was the XO on ship for two years around '60-'62, and Glen Cheek sent my Mom the info on this site. Dad went on to be the Captain of the Saginaw (LST 1188) of which we are all so very proud. Good Website!
Ahoy mates, I served aboard the USS Tom Green County, LST 1159 back in the early 60's. Last year our ship had a reunion aboard the USS Washtenaw County LST 1166 which is alive and well on the Columbia River near Portland Oregon. If any old LST sailors would like to have a reunion aboard the 1166 just give me a shout! Jim.
HEARD DOG TAGS WERE IN STYLE AND THOUGHT I WOULD LOOK AROUND TO SEE WHAT THE LATEST INFO WAS. I WAS NEVER ISSUED TAGS DURING MY TIME IN THE NAVY. AFTER 3YEARS ON GUAM ON USS PROTEUS (AS-19) I SERVED 3 YEARS AT NAVY MIRAMAR AS A DRUG AND ALCOHOL COUNSELOR.
Nice page...keep up the good work. Served aboard the Traverse County LST-1160. Has there ever been anything that gives a ride like an LST. And think, we got paid too.
I am not in the military, but my dad served in the US Navy during the Korean War, and my son is presently serving the US Navy. My son is the one who sent me this site as I am interested in Navy history. Thanks for the insightful site.
I served aboard the Tioga with my best friends M.K.Moore, Jimmy Capps and Donnie Hartley. We have always kept in contact and get togather on occassions. Looking for Milo Turner, GMG 3
I am not a sailor, but Love My Country and those who have given of themselves ...This is a great site. Keep it going as it means so much to our Sailors and other Military...as well as citizens like myself. Thanks and God bless you richly!!
I served 4 years aboard the T-Bone ( 1156) when I reported aboard they told me the only way to get off was to die or get seperated from active duty. lol Was a great expierence though wouldn't change it for the world.
Webmaster of the Gatorforce.com site and have been associated with a group trying to save the Lorain County (LST 1177). Like your site. Have setup a link to your 1156 page. Would appreciate a link to Gatorforce. We are trying to act as a gateway to gator sites.

THIRD SHIP REUION FOR THE USS TOM GREEN COUNTY LST 1159. STILL LOOKING FOR MORE SHIPMATES FOR THE 5TH CRUISE VIETNAM.
i was on her when she was commissioned and still have my plank owners card. I was hoping to go to a reunion and see the ship again but i guess that is out of the question.
I was on her when she was commissioned and still have my plank owners card. I was hoping to be able to go to a ships reunion and see her again but i guess that wont be possible. I also have a copy of the first entry in the her ships log.
I was privileged to serve on the Tioga first as the CIC Officer and then as the Communications Officer and finally as the Operations Officer. I see in the log the comments of some of those with whom I served and their loved ones; for example Captain Ekman, Dick Cline, Dave Rogers, Tom Miller,Tony Massey, Captain Smith's widow and Sheldon Bowman's widow. While I was on board Larry Rice and Billy Ralph Tilger were XO's along with Dick Burris and Bill Spring. Bill Meddings was the First Lt. replaced by Tom Kopfler when Bill left for the "greyhound" fleet after a tour at Destroyer school. When I came on board Bill Early was the Operations Officer soon replaced by Bill Barstad. Bill was replaced by Landis Morefield and I replaced Landis. Walt Buchert was the Engineering Officer to be replaced by Joel Taylor.Jim Seeley replaced Joel I believe. I don't recall whether Charlie Torri replaced Jim or whether there was an intervening Engineering Officer. Dave Hull was the Gunnery Officer when I reported and I believe that Tom Kopfler replaced him before he became First Lt. Fred Hannes was the Supply Officer who was replaced by Terry Boyd. Of course we all knew that the ship ran because of the Chiefs and we had outstanding Chiefs. I especially recall BMC Chitester and QMC "Frenchy" Verroneau. There was an outstanding Chief Electrician whose name escapes me. When I was the Ops Officer I was privileged to serve with an outstanding group of men who worked hard especially during two tours in Vietman [ so what if we bent the rules a bit in port and maybe did not have a full complement of men on board]. The point is that when asked, these men did what was asked on them and I take great pride in the fact that I was one of them, especially during the long hours on operations in Vietnam. I had occasion to return to Vietman in 1994, but only to Hanoi. What a strange and beautiful country. All for now, anyone feel free to write.
I am in my last year of college at LeTourneau University in Longview, TX. I am in the BDCP, and upon graduation I will head to OCS in Pensacola, FL. After OCS I will begin flight training. Go NAVY!!!
Just surfed in looking for some history on a Dog Tag I was issues when I was in grade school back in the 1950's.
I was in the US Army stationed in Viet Nam 1967 / 1968. I was an Advisor With MACV Advisory Team # 93. Our 5 man team was assisted by PBR's, and Sea wolf. Enjoyed working with the Navy. Did one operation with an LST, and a Destroyer. Assaulted a beach at the mouth of the My Tho River, and the South China Sea I'm sorry don't know name of either Ship.
I'm having a memory blast! Pearl Harbor, WestPac, my beautiful 5"-38 on the fantail! What a great time!!! Looking back, I'm more proud than I ever imagined at the time. Go Navy!!
This is a beautiful tribute to your ship. I have you linked up from the Vernon County Site. Please put your site on the Landing Ship Tank Webring we need more of these great sites on there. May you Have Fair Winds and Following Seas!!!
Having served on the USS Palmyra ARST-3, a converted LST, we have a lot in common since our duty was about the same, although I feel we had more excitment on our "Blue Goose" than most ships, since we can brag of many. many colisions...per Pearl Harbor, Panama Canal, New Orleans and OrangeTX. If you have see the movie "Mr. Roberts" -we put them to shame.
Former Navy Corpsman from 1992-2000. Stationed in Camp Lejuene with 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd FSSG, and Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital. Also stationed at National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD.
LST 246 broached and lost on Iwo Jima 1949 while on resuply mission. I was in Army then. Referred by John Shank Military Magazine. I am serving on Board of Directors US LST Association.
Penpals with several service men and women in the Persian Gulf and wanted to know what their ratings meant. This was the best description for the civilian that I've found. Thank you! Ya'll are fantastic. Keep up the great work!!!
Cool site man! Nice to see we're appreciated by more than the liberal press and the f___ing French weinies. Keep it up. Will check back with you later.
I am not in the military, but have loved ones who are, and were...some lived to tell about it, for others, their story was told in the folding of the flag and a 21 gun salute; my daughter is on her way to Iraq, my son-in-law left for Iraq today; my step-son is there. God bless all of you who serve!
The Tiger was a good ship and I served with a good crew. The CO was O.J.VOGEL and the XO's were Campbell and Rice. I remember seeing a blue flag on board. It had a tiger on it with the following words "When the going got to tough for others,it was just right for us"
I was assigned to Tioga in July 1966 out of OCS as an Ensign and Communications Officer/Ops Division Officer. Lcdr (later Cdr) Roger Eckmann was the C.O. Lt Richard Burris was the XO. He was followed by Lt. William Spring who was promoted from Engineering Officer. Eckmann was succeeded by a mustang LCDR Charles Smith who just passed away. Smith had been a tugboat skipper and was one of the best ship drivers in the fleet. I left the ship in about September 68 having made one tour to Vietnam. When I left, I was a Ltjg. and the Ops. Officer. When I moved up to Ops Officer in Oct. 1967, Henry Jonas took over as Comm. Officer. Ens. Arthur Carden came aboard as CIC officer in about the summer 1967. Art stayed in awhile and made at least LCDR. Looking at your website, I believe Sheldon Bowman may have been a radioman or signalman in my division. In the summer of 1966, Spring was Eng. Officer and Charles Torri was Damage Control/ Eng. Div Officer. Spring moved up to XO in 1967 and Torri became Engineering Officer. Ens. Rolland Thronson came aboard as Damage Control Officer and Eng. Div. Officer. Burris moved over to CO of a 546 class LST. I am in touch with Torri who lives in the Chicago area. The Ops Officer in 1966 was Ltjg Paul Kane. Paul got out in Japan in October 1966, went to law school and practices in Boston. In 1966 Ltjg Tom Koffler (sp) was First Lieutenant. Ens. Edward Conover was Asst. First Lt. and Deck Division Officer. Koffler got off the ship in early 1967 and Conover moved up to 1st Lt. Ens. William Woodard in early 1967. He got out and became a preacher in Albequerque, N.M. Ens. Ron Fitts (sp.) also came into the deck dept. about 1967. The Supply Office in 1966 was Ltjg Terry Boyd. He now lives near me in northern San Diego County. He was relieved by Ens. "Chris" Christofferson. I may be able to dredge up some additional information, if this is of any interest to you. Richard G. Cline
It brought a tear to my eye thinking of the great times we had when we were very young men. It can never be erased from our memory. I salute all my old shipmates where ever you are. Curly
