The employment capabilities of the Tank Landing Ship USS Tioga County LST-1158 are many and varied. Her primary mission is to transport and land tanks, amphibious vehicles, combat vehicles, and equipment over the beach in an amphibious assault.
Her ability to land cargo directly on the assault beach greatly speeds up any amphibious operation as it alleviates much of the slow, tedious ship to shore movement of equipment.
TIOGA COUNTY has available 17,248 square feet of space for the storage of cargo, tanks, jeeps and amphibious vehicles of all sizes. Both the main deck and the tank deck can be used for this purpose. The main deck makes an excellent landing area for helicopters as large as the Navy's HUS.
Among the secondary mission of TIOGA COUNTY is acting as a casualty evacuation ship. She is equipped with two emergency operating rooms and facilities to take care of many wounded. Another of her missions is to act as a secondary control ship for the beach lane. Although not known primarily as a troop carrier, TIOGA COUNTY has accomodations for the berthing and messing of 400 troop officers and men. She is also equipped to carry the pontoon causeways sometimes used for debarking the troops and their equipment onto the beach when the slope of the beach is too gentle to allow the ship to beach close to the shore line.
